Six Tips for More Youthful Skin

The key to looking your best is, of course, feeling your best. Our skin will slowly age over time, and that’s ok. Laugh lines and sunspots show a life lived to the fullest.

The key to looking your best is, of course,  feeling your best. Our skin will slowly age over time, and that’s ok. Laugh lines and sunspots show a life lived to the fullest. While you shouldn’t be living in a tiny protective bubble, there are still ways to care for your skin (and your body) to keep it healthy and youthful.

The easiest (and cheapest) ways to keep your skin looking youthful include putting on SPF, utilizing the right eye cream, relaxing your neck & face muscles, staying moisturized, consuming less sugar & alcohol, and using a face massager tool.

While you could spend lots of money on facials and micro-needling appointments, these treatments are not accessible to everyone. We have detailed our skin hacks for you down below. These are easy tricks that you can add to your self-care regimen that won’t cost you huge amounts of money.

1. Always put on SPF.

One of the easiest, and most important skin hacks, is to ensure that you are putting on SPF! Try to make sure it’s at least SPF 30, as you will get better protection for the money spent.

The road to finding the right face sunscreen is paved with trial and error. Everyone’s skin reacts differently to sunscreen. When in doubt, start out with ones made by reputable cosmetics companies and that is for sensitive skin.

Make sure to always use face sunscreen that is designed for the FACE. Other sunscreens may clog your pores. If you are vegan or looking for cruelty-free face sunscreens, Veg News has you covered.

2. Use an eye cream that has caffeine and either retinol or peptides.

The skin under our eyes is much thinner and more sensitive than the rest of our face. This skin needs to be cared for differently, which is why we suggest buying a heavy-duty eye cream.

You should ideally look for an eye cream with caffeine or retinol. Caffeine takes care of bags and dark circles, while peptides and retinol stimulate collagen and elastin production. Collagen is responsible for making your skin firm and makes up 80% of a person’s skin.

If you can’t find an eye cream with those ingredients, cold green tea bags make great substitutes! Soak them in water and freeze them overnight before applying over your eyelids.

3. Make sure you are relaxed.

Stress plays a huge impact on the health of your skin. From dryness to acne, stress can create all sorts of skin problems for you. Make sure that you are taking care of yourself and coping with stress in a healthy way!

The best ways to manage your stress include getting enough sleep, exercising, participating in yoga, meditating (and other mindfulness practices), creating things (cooking, painting, etc.) and talking about your stress with a therapist or a close friend.

Additionally, it’s important to check in and see if you are tensing your muscles throughout the day. You may be unintentionally keeping your neck or face muscles tense. Tensing these muscles can pull and stretch the skin, which can cause unnecessary wear and tear.

4. Stay moisturized, Queen.

Maintaining a well-moisturized face is one of the easiest ways to ensure that your skin maintains its youthful glow. Yes, it may be a pain to remember to wash your face every night and apply your moisturizer, but it will make you feel and look amazing.

By keeping your skin from becoming dehydrated, you’re essentially fighting off free radicals, which hasten the aging process. If your skin dries out, oxidative stress causes skin imbalances. We definitely don’t want that.

5. Less sugar, smoke, and booze.

The science backs it. Once you hit adulthood, the body stops making collagen. Smoking and drinking destroy whatever collagen you have left. That adds on to the degeneration that naturally occurs beginning at the age of 30.

Sugar is also a huge culprit and one of the free radicals causing unnecessary aging. Not to mention, sugar consumption can make you break-out or gain weight.

Of course, you should still enjoy your life. Have that beer. Eat that cookie. Just make sure that you are doing so consciously and with your skin (and body) in mind :)

6. Use a facial massage tool.

Facial massagers are all the rage right now, but with good reason! Getting a professional to massage your face regularly can be costly, but you can save a ton of money when you have a face massager at home.

There are so many different types of face massagers on the market. Whether you want a vibrating face massager, a jade-roller or one with micro-currents, you can find what you are looking for.
